How Connections' four colors work

Every board sorts sixteen words into four groups of four, and the four groups are always ranked the same way: yellow is the easiest connection, green and blue get progressively trickier, and purple is the hardest, usually a pun or a wordplay category rather than a plain shared meaning. The trap built into the puzzle is overlap: a word that looks like it belongs to an easy group can actually be a red herring meant for a harder one, which is why the puzzle allows four mistakes rather than one.

That ranking is also the reason our nudges are ordered yellow to purple below. If you only want a push in the right direction, take the yellow one first; the categories that stay stubborn are almost always green, blue, or purple, in that order. Purple in particular is worth reading twice: it is where a constructor hides a category built on sound rather than meaning, so a word that seems out of place among the other fifteen is frequently the whole clue.

Reading a nudge without reading past it

Each nudge below is written to describe the connection without naming it, which only works if you stop reading the moment it clicks. Open the group name underneath only once you think you know it, and open the four words only after that, since seeing them first turns a nudge you were meant to reason through into an answer you were handed. The three-step order, nudge, then name, then words, is there so you can take exactly one step at a time.

If a nudge alone isn't enough, the group name usually is: it states the category outright and leaves only the sorting to you. Save the full word list for a group you are genuinely stuck on, not the first one you open, or the run of easy yeses turns into a run of spoilers you didn't need.
