Wordle archive

Wordle gives you six guesses at one five-letter word, and it is the same word everybody else is working on, which is why the conversation about it starts at breakfast. Our hints are ordered by how much they give away: letter facts first, then a definition, then the answer behind a reveal you have to open on purpose. The archive is where you settle what the word was on a day you missed, or lost.

How Wordle works

Six guesses at one five-letter word. Every guess comes back colored: green for a letter in the right place, yellow for a letter that belongs somewhere else, gray for one that is not in the word at all. The word is the same for every player in the world that day, which is what makes it a conversation rather than a solitaire. Hard mode adds a single rule: any letter the board has confirmed must appear in every guess after it.

What a dated page holds

Each day opens with the answer set in letter tiles alongside its tile score, then the part of speech and the dictionary definition, then the five hints in the order they went out that morning. The hints are the interesting half on a day you lost. Reading them back shows which one you would actually have needed, and how many of the others you could have skipped.

What builds up here

One day is a curiosity. A month of them starts to show the shape of the answer list: how often a letter repeats, which openings keep earning their place, how rarely the word is genuinely obscure. Every past day keeps its own permanent address, so a date you remember is a link you can send to the person you argued with about it.
