Sixteen letters. Build words of four to seven letters, at least three of them. Letters are spent when you use them, so the long words are worth the most and cost the most. Today's par is 95.

How to play

Letters are spent. Every letter you use is gone for the rest of the round, and it does not come back. 16 letters looks like plenty until you notice that a seven-letter word, a five and a four spend all sixteen of them exactly. That is the best round available on most days, and it is worth 135 points.

You must bank at least 3 words. A round with fewer does not score at all. This is the rule that makes the game a game: two seven-letter words are only fourteen letters, which feels like a triumph until you find that the two letters left cannot make a third word, and the round ends with nothing.

Longer is worth much more. Four letters scores 10, five scores 25, six scores 50, and seven scores 100. Letter values do not come into it: a Q is worth exactly what an E is worth. Finding the long word is the fun move and the winning move, and knowing when you cannot afford it is the skill.

The round ends when the rack can no longer make a four-letter word, or when you decide to stop once you have banked 3. Par is a good round rather than a perfect one, at roughly seventy percent of the best score the rack allows. Every word is checked against the same public-domain list the rest of this site searches, so anything the word finder knows will play here.
