Funnest is the superlative half of the same argument as funner, and it attracts slightly more objection because superlatives feel more emphatic. Apple used it in advertising years ago and the complaints were loud enough to make news, which tells you where the register sits. Most fun is the neutral form and works in every context. If you are writing dialogue or anything with a spoken voice, funnest is doing a job that most fun cannot quite do. The two travel together. A writer who accepts funner will accept funnest, and a reader who objects to one will object to both, so there is little point splitting them.
