How to use it

Worser doubles up: worse is already the comparative of bad, so adding -er comparises it twice. It was respectable once and appears in Shakespeare, but the language moved on and it now reads as either dialect or error. Worse is the form to use. The same doubling produces more worse and worserer, which are the versions nobody defends. Shakespeare used it, which is why it still turns up in quotation, and why some readers assume the form is merely old-fashioned rather than out of use.
