Words Without Vowels

121words

There are 121 English words with no A, E, I, O, or U in the word list Wordton searches, ENABLE plus a curated modern supplement.

First, the terms: this list counts A, E, I, O, and U as vowels and lets Y stand as a consonant, which is the convention crossword setters and tile-game players expect. By that rule the words below have no vowel at all, though most of them put Y to work doing a vowel's job: MY, GYM, MYTH, CRYPT, LYMPH, RHYTHM.

A stricter reading, no vowel letter and no Y either, leaves a much shorter list: interjections like BRR, HM, MM, PST, SH, and TSK, plus the Welsh borrowings CWM, a mountain hollow, and CRWTH, a bowed lyre, where W does the vowel work instead. Both kinds are below, drawn from the same 173,000-word list the finder searches, grouped by length with the longest first.
