How to use it

Gonna is a written representation of how going to is actually pronounced in connected speech, in the same family as wanna and gotta. It is not slang so much as transcription. In dialogue, lyrics and informal writing it is perfectly serviceable and often more natural than the full form. In anything formal, write going to, and note that gonna only works before a verb: you are gonna leave, but never I am gonna the shop.
