How to use it

Snuck is a relative newcomer that pushed its way in beside sneaked, and it is now the more common past tense in American English by a wide margin. It arose by analogy with pairs like stick and stuck. Sneaked remains standard and is preferred in British usage and in formal prose, but snuck is no longer a marker of carelessness anywhere in North America. Either is defensible; pick one and stay with it in a piece. The pattern that produced it is still working. Children who have never heard snuck will invent it unprompted, which is usually how a form like this arrives.
