The Q is the most feared tile in the bag and the most misunderstood. It is worth ten points, the joint highest, but only if you can place it, and the U it usually needs is a second tile you may not hold. The list below is ordered by tile score, so the words that make the Q worth having come first.
The Q without a U
Almost every English Q leans on a U, which is why a Q with no U on the rack feels like a dead tile. It is not. QI is the play to know first: two tiles, eleven points before any premium square, and it fits where nothing else will. After that the useful ones are QAT, a shrub chewed as a stimulant, QAID, a chieftain, QOPH, a Hebrew letter, and QANAT, an underground irrigation channel. FAQIR takes a Q without a following U in the middle of the word, which catches people out.
One honest gap: the public-domain list this page is built from predates the acceptance of QI and its relatives, so QI does not appear in the list below even though it is playable. That is the clearest example on the site of why these two things are worth keeping separate, and it has a page of its own.
